Submitting FA1 form abroad vs in Denmark on tourist visa

I am ready to send in my application and will be in Denmark next month on a tourist visa (at least, as a tourist; I am American, so am part of the visa waiver program). If I apply now, will it be ok that I enter while my application is pending? Or should I wait until after I'm in the country to apply? Does it matter?

Well - it may matter if you want to stay in DK until residence permit is granted, which may take longer than the 90 days you can stay legally.

If you hand in the application while you are in DK, you will most likely automatically be granted 'processual stay' - a right to stay while your application is being handled, even if it takes longer than the 3 months that is the 'target' - it often does.

If you send in your application from abroad you will not get this right, and will have to leave at the latest 90 days after your entry if you have not received an answer yet.

Ok, thank! One more question: if I turn it in while in Denmark, is it still ok to leave even if I haven't received a response, or do I have to stay (even if it's beyond the 90 days) until I get a response? I have work in the States for a couple of months after the 90 days are up and have to come back then.

You dont need to stay in Denmark, just because you handed in your application here. However you should let immigration service know, where they can contact you, and where the decision need to be send to.

I think its better for you to hand it in in Denmark, because then there is no fee, while the fee for handing it in at an embassy is at least around 200 USD + you need to travel to the embassy.

Thank you for all the help! I submitted my application in October (in Denmark), have not received confirmation yet and am going abroad again at the end of this month. Do I need to let Udlændingestyrelsen know that I am leaving for reasons other than letting them know where to send their response? I'll be traveling, so the best place for them to send it will still be my address in Denmark. We will have family and friends checking the mail for us. Or do I need to let them know for when I reenter Denmark? Should I call them?

For short visits out of the country, you don't need to inform them. It's only if you leave Denmark for extended stays and don't have a valid address in Denmark anymore that you need to contact them.
