Hi Everyone
We are a couple from Denmark and the USA. After spending a lot of time (and money) traveling back and forth between Denmark and the States we have come to the conclusion that we want to live together in the same location. We have researched a wide range of possible ways to be together in the USA, and have decided that we would like to know more about what it would take for the both of us to be together in either Denmark or in Europe.
The fact that only one of us is a citizen of the EU seems to make it more difficult for us to be together in Denmark. We have also thought about what marriage means for our situation. We do plan on marrying some day, but we are unsure what implications this may have for our options to live in either the USA or Denmark. On the one hand, if we are married and not living together, it could make it more difficult for my Danish girlfriend to visit the USA. On the other hand it seems that marriage might make it easier for us if we plan on settling for a while in Europe. After doing the research on family reunification visas in Denmark, we have found that we could meet all of the criteria except for the housing requirement. This is a difficult one because, to my understanding, it is illegal for private apartment owners to rent out their spaces for more than a 2 year period and we would need a 3 year lease to fulfill the housing requirement. The other ways to work with the housing requirement would be to purchase a place (we are not currently in the position to do so) or to become a part of the cooperative housing society (boligselskab), and although my girlfriend has been on the waiting list for 6 years it seems that this is an unreliable option. Given these obstacles we have also thought about the possibility of living and working in another European country after we are married. We are curious if this would have any effect on us if we wanted to come back to Denmark after a few years. By that time we would have been married for a few years and although I am an American citizen, I would have been working in the EU during that time period. If we then want to come back to Denmark would we still face the same difficulties of the housing requirement, or would that be a different situation. If anybody has any responses for these questions or any general suggestions or advice pertaining to our situation (USA-Denmark couples trying to live together) we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.[/i]

I think this is what you are looking for. You will only have to meet 3 requirements if you are returning to DK from another EU country.
