My name is Jia and I hope I post my topic on the right thread. Otherwise, moderator please help to relocate this thread-thanks in advance! I'm better with English so my topic will be written in English. It might be a little lengthy so please bear with me and any suggestions are welcome.
I'm a 23 year old Singaporean girl who worked in Greenland for about 1 ½ years and I met my Greenlander boyfriend. We want to get married eventually. Not updated with the current immigration laws until now, I realised that it is gonna be harder than I thought to set foot in Danmark and get a permit to stay.
My boyfriend is currently studying in Denmark and I just came back to Singapore from Greenland. I have a work and residence permit in Greenland but it is gonna be expired at the end of next month. To my understanding, having a permit in Greenland doesn't mean I can stay in Denmark. My question is, does the immigration(marriage laws) also applies to Greenlanders as well?
We are thinking about getting married in Denmark and hope to stay there. If not, I might go back to Greenland with him. I can't seem to find a lot of info about the marriage laws in Greenland. Anyone who is familiar can you please enlighten me?
I am lost and I really don't know what is the right way to go about just to be together with him.

A work permit for Greenland could also be valid for Denmark but it depends on the type of permit. Up until now, the Danish immigration laws have been applied to Greenland as well, although Greenland would like to be able to make its own laws to make it easier to get skilled workers from abroad settle in Greenland. Since your work permit is about to expire, I suggest you speak with somebody at the Danish Immigration Service and ask about the requirements to have it extended. It might be possible to extend it if you have a job on offer in Denmark (or Greenland).
Being a Greenlander, your boyfriend is a Danish citizen and all the Danish laws will apply. You will not be able to use the EU laws because Greenland is outside both the EU and the EEA. Did you co-habit in Greenland and for how long time? If you lived together for a considerable time, it may be that you don't have to get married in order to get a Danish residence permit on the grounds of your relationship.
But as I stated previously, if you hold a work permit for Greenland, you might be able to extend it and it might be possible for you to work in Denmark as well, in which case it would probably be easier to follow that path of procedure than to apply for a residence permit on grounds of your relationship with your boyfriend.

I might think about moving to Greenland for a longer period but not bonded with a place (same employer).
Anyway, i did some research about it about found out that many couples could not get their partners into Denmark. I am disappointed and sad after reading more into it 'cause I don't know how to go about approaching anymore.

OK, what kind of education do you have? And what was your latest job position in Greenland? Some professions are really sought after in Denmark and the government has made it easier for people with the right skills to get a work and residence permit if you're one of the lucky ones having the right educational background. Try search for the word "jobkort" and you'll find all the relevant information about that.

As a student he is exempt from certain requirements such as being able to provide for your upkeep when you apply for a residence permit on grounds of marriage. But the process can be quite stressful and the outcome uncertain even if you're married since there are a lot of other requirements you both have to meet. You both have to be at least 24 years old, for instance.
Alternatively, you may consider the EU option if your bf can take time off from his studies and live in another EU/EEA country for a minimum of 70 days and being self-sufficient economically during that period of time - or if his studies are close to the Swedish or German border, he can still study and just live in Sweden or Germany together with you for the minimum amount of 70 days. Then, all the national Danish requirements are void and you can apply for a residence permit the easier way through the EU regulations. You still have to be married, though, or prove that you have been co-habiting for at least the previous 18 months.

I have a college diploma in apparel design and merchandising. I worked as a merchandiser upon my graduation for about a year before I left to Greenland to work as a restaurant manager. It seems like my qualification is not in much demand or needed. I am going to be a flight attendant soon too. I glad that i got the job 'cos I am hoping this will somehow help me to get some experience and to stay in the hospitality line for long. I hope to continue to do that still or find a job in denmark in this line.

As you have said earlier in the post, Greenland technically is not under EU/EEA i wonder if there is any restriction in terms of movement imposed on Greenlanders? It seems like there is a fine line between Greenlander's carrying a danish passport but not able to enjoy the benefits but still is part of the kingdom of denmark. I get really stuck there to comprehen. Maybe there's some fine print somewhere....

You can apply for a residence permit on grounds of marriage with a Dane when you're both at least 23,5 years old but the actual residence permit won't go through until your 24th birthday.

The decision by the European Court of Justice has been debated extensively here on forum but most posts are in Danish so maybe you can ask your boyfriend to help you read them if you don't read Danish
