Yes, you can study in Denmark but you are not allowed to take up any kind of work. So any kind of internship would be unpaid and should be part of the curriculum at the education in question. Otherwise, you have to apply for a work permit in Denmark.

Are you able to study (for free) in Denmark, if you and your spouse live in Sweden?

I am danish and I believe we were advised that my non-EU spouse could not study in Sweden if we lived in Denmark, but does it work differently the other way around.

Payment is an entirely different issue.

Usually if you are a citizen of a country outside the EU, you must pay for your education.

How much and under which circumstances are entirely up to the institution in question to decide. So you have to ask. Some places let students study for free simply because they live in the EU, although not a citizen. Others don't.

But yes, you are allowed to study in Denmark and commute daily across the border from Sweden, but you are not allowed to live or work in Denmark.

As for studying in Sweden, when you have a Swedish residence card/permit, you are allowed to work, live and study in Sweden. If the institution asks for payment of students who are not EU citizens, is entirely up to the institution to decide.

Thank you for making that clear. That was also my understanding about study right / payment.

But I actually thought it was a matter of the equal right of your spouse who is married to an EU citizen. That if the EU spouse doesn't have to pay to study in the country, then the same rules applies to his family.

What you are talking about is relevant when it comes to the national study grant schemes in each country but it has nothing to do with any fees imposed for tuition.

For instance: If a person is working in a host country and afterwards decides to study, that person would be entitled to the study grant in that country. If the person has not been working in the country but is married/cohabiting with an EU citizen who is working in that country, the person would qualify too.

But as for tuition fees those each institution can set more or less freely. There are also instances when a Danish student who studies in Denmark has to pay for tuition. That is relevant for some Master courses, for instance.

And a Dane who moves to the UK to study, might also be charged some tuition fee in the UK. And the British institution might have different set of fees depending on the nationality of students so that there are different fees for British and EU citizens, and another fee for overseas students.
