Danish residency after swedish residency.

Hello there. I would like to know what the procedure is for moving to denmark, with a swedish residency permit. I'm an american citizen living in malmoe. My girlfriend lives in copenhagen and we would like to get married and live together in dk.

There is no "special treatment", just because you have a residence permit in Sweden. The Danish rules will still apply to you.

On the other hand, if you can ask your girlfriend to move in with you in Sweden and stay with you for at least 3 months, then you will be able to use EU laws instead, provided that you also get married before you move to Denmark.

If you stay in Sweden for 5 years, you can apply for swedish citizenship. Then you can freely move to Danmark due to both the nordic agreement and the free movement in EU.

If your residence permit in Sweden has been made permanent, you can also freely move to most EU countries like Germany or Romania. But not Denmark, UK or Ireland, because we do not participate in this part of the EU cooperation (legal and internal affairs).

Thank you for the quick replies. I believe the best thing to do would be to talk once again with the good people at the danish udlændingestyrelsen. About a year ago I spoke to them explaining my situation and my desire for a danish residency permit. I had permanent danish residency, CPR number, the works some years ago(2006) but lost it when I moved to Sweden. I was given the impression that if I managed to get my swedish residency permit again(Iforgot to re-apply in 2009), which I have, that maybe it would help to get danish residency again. There's more to the story of course but that's most of it.

Anyways, any extra info would be a big help. Thanks again.
