I will not advise you to leave the Schengen area once your visa has expired. In fact, you might even get into trouble if you try to travel around the Schengen area on an expired visa.

You can apply at the Migration Board the same day you arrive to Sweden.

If you don't intend to remain in Sweden, there is no point in applying under Swedish laws. The benefits of applying under Swedish laws is that you may either obtain a permanent residence permit right away or after 2 years in Sweden. But it won't be of any use if you don't intend to remain in Sweden.

I think I have told you already that you can register the same day you arrive to Sweden if you wish. And you can do it even before your wife has been to the tax office to register an address.
