Once you register, they make the CPR number for you. In order to register as the 3rd country spouse of an EU citizen, she will have to hand in copies of her application for a residence card at Statsforvaltningen as proof.

Okay so you mean that first we send in her application for residence card, and while it's being processed we register her at Folkeregistret?

Yes, it's the act of handing in her application for a residence card that enables her to be registered in the people's registry, to start work or language courses in Denmark.

It won't be any problems with my wife applying for the residence permit if she's got a Schengen-visa issued to Sweden right?

The advantage is that your spouse can be registered in Sweden instantly, obtain a Swedish personal number and start her life there with work or Swedish language courses and not having to wait and do nothing in the meanwhile as would be the situation if you apply under national Swedish laws.

When applying for the residence card do they keep my wife's passport and in that case, for how long?

No you should not give them her original passport. She need to have that one on her, in case the police want to see her papers, or if she want to travel somewhere.

Just got back from Statsforvaltningen and they wouldn't accept our marriage registration from Skatteverket. We got married in Indonesia but afterwards registered the marriage at Skatteverket so that we are legally married and registered in Sweden as well. Today we brought a print of my Familjebevis from Skatteverket as proof of marriage but it was not considered valid. Instead the woman we talked to insisted that my wife has to go back to Indonesia and have the marriage certificate legalized in 3 steps, including at the Danish embassy in Indonesia.

Is this true or did she not know the rules? I am also contacting Skatteverket, Öresund Direkt etc for further advice.

What was the requirement to be registered at Skatteverket? Sweden and Denmark might have different requirements for Indonesian documents ...

We had to send in documents proving our marriage is legal and valid in Indonesia (marriage certificate, or in this case a marriage book), and also copy of both our passports. And we also had to fill out a form with questions regarding who attended the ceremony to make sure we were both there, signed by both of us.

Went to the Indonesian embassy in Copenhagen afterwards to talk to them. They said that they are also allowed to legalize marriages and gave us contacts to authorized translators to use. The woman at Statsforvaltningen however, never mentioned this as an option.

The people at the embassy said they contacted Köpenhamns Kommune and verified that they are allowed to legalize the documents. Would it be possible to first register the marriage with Köpenhamns Kommune and then bring this as proof of our marriage to Statsforvaltningen?

Not all embassies do legalizing of their own country's documents, and Statsforvaltningen cannot be expected to know which countries have authorized their embassies to legalize.

That said, if Copenhagen will accept the document legalized by the Indonesian embassy, so should Statsforvaltningen. However, Statsforvaltningen is a STATE authority, the municipality is not, so Statsforvaltningen has other and stricter requirements. Try, though. The embassy is after all also a state authority.
