Help with application

I'm trying to fill out the application for a EU residence document but it asks about date of entry and how long we are planning to reside here. Is it bad if my wife entered the country over a week ago and that we didn't apply the day we came? And how relevant is it to say how long we are staying? We might stay anywhere between 8-12 months...is that a bad thing? thanks

There is nothing "bad" about applying after one week. But in order to be registered you ought to say you will remain at least for one year or more.

and then we can "change our mind" later and leave the country after say 8-10 months to return to my home country? no problem that there is a minor discrepancy between the time stated and the time we actually stay? thanks

You can change your mind any time you like, you just have to persuade the authorities of your sincere wish to remain in the country for at least one year or more. Helpful in that would be documents to prove it. For instance work contracts or rental leases for that amount of time.
