I have been with my (now) fiance for a little over a year now. I am American and he is Danish. We met while he was on vacation here and kept in contact.. Feelings grew, we decided to opt for a relationship.
I have no ties to Denmark or any part of the EU and have never visited.. Hoping to change that fairly soon. Now.. There is a bit of an age difference between the two of us. He is 22 and I am 27. I keep reading conflicting things regarding marriage, age, and family being brought into the country.
I am looking into finishing school.. Going into social work and am still finishing an assosciates degree. I am a single mother and ended up working in retail most of my working life. He is a single father and has done the same.. (Welfare is involved but he is working to get off of it and save up)..
My question is.. We want to move in together at some point.. And we are not sure how to go about it. It will be at least 6 months to a year before we can even attempt this.. However Denmark seems incredibly strict on who they allow to stay.
Would it be more beneficial for us both to move to Sweden? How would this benefit us in the long run?

Hi. Under the menu point "rådgivning" you can find ÆUGs guide about both danish rules for family reunification and the right to free movement in the EU. As for now there is no english translation, so perhaps you can ask your boyfriend to read and translate for you?

In the danish rules there is a 24 year age limit, which is obviously a problem for you right now. However you will "grow out" of that pretty soon. Its possible to apply at the age of 23½, since there is a processing time of around 6 month.

Taking advantage of the right to free movement in the EU by moving to eg. Sweden is a popular solution for cupples, which do not live up to the 24 year age limit or other national danish requirements.

There are obviously also drawbacks about moving across borders. So if you are able to fulfill the danish requirements, it is not automatically the best solution for you. You will need to make an informed decision based on your personal situation and preferences. And simply waiting until the age of 23½ is a completely legitimate solution as well.

Please note that you need to be married to use either danish rules or EU-rules to stay together as a family. So this is the very first step, you need to plan and take.

Depending on the situation, you might only need to get married, not be in a forced marriage and not be in a marriage of convenience.

Keep an open mind as to which EU-country you would use - England may soon be out of the question, but Ireland and Malta are other options, plus of course all the other where English isn't the official language. Plus the EEA-countries.
