Just a quick question about the law that says that Danish children who are born as dual-citizens have to sign a declaration when they turn 22 to maintain their Danish citizenship. I'm an American married to a Dane, and our daughter was born in Denmark, but also has American citizenship through me. As far as I understand it, the law doesn't apply to her, since she was born in Denmark and has one Danish parent. And on top of that, I would assume that the new dual citizenship law would make the declaration obsolete, but some people are telling us that she will still need to sign the declaration at 22.

Anyone have some more insight into this?

Wish it were THAT easy - Danish children born outside of DK actually have to apply to maintain their DK-citizenship, and have to show that they have sufficient attachment to DK in order to do that. Ridiculous as it may seem, they have to go through this procedure even if they were born outside of DK, but have lived in DK since the very first day of their life. This work-producing rule applies both to those with only DK-citizenship and dual citizens. And the new rule does not change this at all.

However - the good news: Since your child was born in DK, she does not have to do anything. This would be true even without the new rule.
