At the beginning of this year, US had about 11.000 pending applications for permanent residenceship. Mainly because they received a huge amount of applications - many of them reapplications from people, who have had previous applications turned down - after the new and more lax rules were introduced in juli 2012. So that is the main reason, why it currently takes long time to have such an application processed.
For comparison in 2012 US processed 7.500 applications for permanent residenceship, so the stockpile of applications at the beginning of the year corresponded to something like 1½ years of work for the department, who process these applications.
They do expect to be able to process more than 7.500 applications in 2013, but they dont have unlimited staff ressources. So people need to be a bit patient about this and appreciate, that the law change has given many more a chance to even get a permanent residence permit in the first place. Which is definitly a good thing in my opinion, even if it cause the processing times to temporarely increase.
